This high-quality wood carving U gouge, from Japan, is manufactured by Michihamono. This tool is made from White Paper Steel (Shirogami No. 2). This material is used in making cutting tools that are tough, easy to sharpen, and has a great edge retention, perfect for wood carving. The handle is made from Japanese cherry blossom wood that is designed to fit comfortably in your hand and allows you to carve for an extended period. A ferrule is added to keep the handle from splitting.
This tool has a sharp blade with a sturdy shank but without the bulk and weight of a full size socket wood carving tool. This type of Tsuki Nomi (Japanese wood carving tool) can be used to remove small excess wood and for finishing curved or flat areas on the edges of your wood. It has more durability than finer wood carving hand tools and it can cut sharper than a full sized socket tool with its shallow angled bevel. Tsuki Nomi fills the role between Michihamono's heavy-duty wood carving tools and its finer wood carving hand tools, possessing both the tools' benefits.
