This Michihamono tsuki nomi woodcarving tool features an extremely shallow gouge that is ideal for three-dimensional modelling. The blade has been forged from white steel no. 2, which is composed of iron and carbon, the purest of the carbon steels, making it easy to sharpen and can be forged to exceptional hardness. This results in the blade having excellent edge retention, making it an ideal steel for wood carving tools. A ferrule is attached to prevent cracking of the handle. This tool is available in different blade widths (each sold separately) for dealing with different kinds of woodcarving. The handle made from cherry blossom wood is constant in thickness regardless of the size of the blade.

This tsuki nomi bridges the gap between Michihamono's big socket wood carving tools, which remove huge quantities of wood, and its small wood carving hand tools, which are used for detailed carving. Possessing the benefits of both tool designs which includes a shorter angle bevel than a full-sized socket chisel, allowing for sharper cutting, and a higher angle bevel, hence more durability, than finer wood carving tools. In Japan, it is mainly used for Buddhist sculptures, Noh masks, and Ranma sculptures, and can also be used for wooden cutleries, figurines, or relief carvings.
