Simply don the rubber gloves and mix the Konya-I Indigo Crystals into 5 litres of hot water. Stir until the crystals have completely dissolved and add the reduction agent. Let the mixture sit for 20 minutes. From there put the cloth you wish to dye in a second bucket of water. Remove the cloth and lightly squeeze to get rid of excess moisture. Gently place the cloth into the first bucket with indigo dye and leave it for 3 minutes. Take it out of the indigo bath, squeeze the excess dye out, and rinse the cloth lightly in the second bucket of water. Place the cloth on a sheet of newspaper and squeeze out as much liquid as possible. Please note that the dye will appear green at first, but as it air dries the color will change to lovely indigo.

Please note that Japanese indigo can only be used with cotton, hemp, linen, silk, rayon, or wool. Polyester and other man-made fibres can NOT be dyed. Natural fibres blended with man-made fibres will also not dye well. This includes clothing that is sewn with polyester thread.

This kit contains the following:

  • 10g Konya-I Indigo Crystals
  • 125g reduction agent.
  • 20g Indigo color fixant
  • one pair of rubber gloves
  • English instruction manual

One kit includes enough materials to dye a t-shirt or blouse (200g) several times. In addition to the kit, you will need 2 plastic buckets, newspaper, and something to stir the cloth in dye. We recommend a long pair of chopsticks to be used only for dyeing.
