Update: Our solution to the suspension of De Minimis Rule & Shipping to the United States, 8th September 2025

Please note this blog entry affects US bound orders only.

Dear our valued U.S. Customers.

We want to assure our U.S. customers that we will continue to serve you, in spite of the Trump administration’s executive order suspending the de minimis exemption. However, we want to inform you of how we have mitigated the effects of your new tariff obligations, to ensure a seamless buying experience from Goods Japan.

Sadly, a recent executive order from the Trump administration means that U.S. customers no longer enjoy the freedom to import packages worth less than US$800 tax-free. Unfortunately, this loss of freedom extends to the importation of items from all countries worldwide, including Japan. The good news is that items from Japan have amongst the lowest tariff rates in the world, at only 15%. Despite the comparatively low tariff rate that the latest Trump tariffs have imposed on you, we share in the disappointment of all our U.S. customers and offer our sincerest sympathies. For more information on the de minimis suspension, please see the link below:

Unfortunately, as this executive order imposed only 30 days’ notice, there was insufficient time for the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) or the U.S. Postal Service (USPS) to put a system in place to collect the tariffs for the volume of packages arriving in the U.S. As the U.S. Postal Service does not have the capacity to collect the 15% tariffs from you, Japan Post is temporarily unable to accept shipments to the U.S. at this time. Please see the link below:

Fortunately, we are able to ship your order by FedEx, which will allow us to collect and pay the required 15% tariff on the value of the contents on your behalf, to ensure you will not have to pay any charges when your package arrives at its destination in the U.S. Please know we enjoy a significant discount with FedEx and can charge you significantly below FedEx market rates. We’re also working hard to keep our prices as low as possible to help offset this new tariff on our U.S. customers.

Kindly see below for how we will collect tariffs for our U.S. customers.

How tariffs will appear on goodsjapan.com

  • A flat 15% tariff will be charged on the cost of the goods, which will be remitted to the US government on your behalf.
  • This tax will be visible at checkout, and on your invoice, allowing you to claim on your tax, if possible.
  • Shipping charges are separate, and are not taxed.

Shipping method (U.S. destinations)

  • Currently FedEx is the only available shipping method to the US at this time.
  • FedEx has tariff collection systems in place, that now covers all formerly de minimis packages, so all your tariff obligations will be paid by us in advance, so you don’t have to worry about anything.
  • Japan Post has suspended all commercial shipping to the United States until further notice, as U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) and the U.S. Postal Service (USPS) do not currently have the capacity or systems in place to handle the volume of shipments under the new rules.

Marketplaces (Amazon, eBay, Etsy, Fruugo, etc.)

  • Marketplaces do not allow a separate, itemized tariff line. However, please know we will collect all U.S. tariffs on your behalf, so you will not have to pay anything on delivery.
  • On marketplaces, the tariff is included in the shipping price.

About the De Minimis Exemption
For decades, U.S. customers enjoyed the freedom to import items valued under US$800, tax-free, as the cost of assessing and collecting import duties for these items would cost more than any tax revenue gained. This tax exemption, designed to ensure economic efficiency, secure the U.S. a net tax advantage, and benefit U.S. consumers, was known as the de minimis exemption. Sadly, this freedom ended on the 29th of August 2025, when the current U.S. administration issued an executive order suspending the de minimis exemption indefinitely, imposing a tax burden on U.S.-based importers and end users, such as yourself. Please know that, for orders from Goods Japan, we collect these tariffs on your behalf, ensuring you will not be charged tariffs by the shipping carrier when your order is delivered to you.
