This Yoita Japanese Kanna Woodworking Plane is a compact 42mm hand plane designed for fine surface planing and finishing work. Like traditional Japanese planes, it is operated by pulling the tool toward the user rather than pushing it forward. This pull-cutting action allows precise control of the blade and helps produce thin, even shavings when smoothing timber surfaces.
The plane body is made from wood and fitted with a stainless steel sole plate. Traditional kanna rely on a wooden sole that gradually wears during use. On this model, a stainless steel plate is securely attached to the underside of the body with screws, protecting the wooden base from abrasion and helping maintain a flat reference surface. This construction improves durability and helps the plane glide smoothly across the workpiece while maintaining consistent shaving performance.
The 42mm blade is suited for smoothing timber surfaces, fitting joinery, and preparing wood for finishing. When properly sharpened and adjusted, the plane is capable of producing very thin shavings that refine the surface without tearing the grain.

To use the plane, place the sole flat on the wood surface and pull the tool toward your body while maintaining steady pressure. Japanese planes cut on the pull stroke, allowing the blade to engage the wood smoothly. Depth of cut is adjusted in the traditional manner by gently tapping the top of the blade with a small hammer to advance it. To reduce the cutting depth, lightly tap the rear of the plane body to retract the blade. Small adjustments allow the user to control shaving thickness depending on the work being performed.
After use, remove dust and resin from the blade and apply a light coat of oil to help protect the cutting edge from rust. Store the plane in a dry location and avoid prolonged exposure to moisture. Handle carefully, as the blade is sharp, and keep out of reach of children.
